What is Juneteenth and Why It’s Celebrated

Juneteenth is a significant holiday in the United States that commemorates the end of slavery. The origins of Juneteenth trace back to June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved individuals in the state were free. This proclamation came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which had little effect in Texas due to the limited presence of Union troops there.

Initially celebrated in Texas, Juneteenth became an annual tradition and spread to other states over time. The observance includes various activities such as prayer meetings, singing spirituals, and wearing new clothes to symbolize newfound freedom. These traditions have evolved into modern celebrations featuring family gatherings, festivals, religious services, and educational events.

In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, further solidifying its importance in the nation's history.
