Makers Crafting Change with Upcycled Materials and Clean Water Values

At Flourish Planet, Earth Month is a time to spotlight makers who are transforming waste into beauty and tackling environmental challenges like water pollution through creativity and conscious craftsmanship. This April, we’re spotlighting four remarkable makers who are redefining sustainability through innovation, heritage, and heart: Bihart, Jaggery, Bageeya, and Hilana Upcycled Cotton.

Bihart: Preserving Heritage Through Purposeful Design

Bihart is more than a fashion label- it’s a cultural revival movement. Rooted in the rich artistic traditions of Bihar, this brand blends age-old crafts like Sujani, Manjusha, Sikki, and distinctive weaves like fishnet, extra weft, Chingari, and Jharna into contemporary apparel and lifestyle pieces. Their product range- spanning sarees, kurtas, Anarkalis, throws, and accessories- tells a story of resilience, revival, and relevance.

By working with six weaver clusters and artisan groups across Bihar, many of which are women-led, Bihart sustains generational craftsmanship. Their zero-waste, zero-plastic philosophy and use of only natural fibers and upcycled waste fabric reflects a deep respect for the environment. Through innovation in design and regular upskilling workshops, Bihart ensures traditional art remains both cherished and commercially viable.

Jaggery: Upcycling with Impact

In Gurgaon, Jaggery is proving that bags can carry more than just essentials- they can carry change. This women-led social enterprise upcycles industrial and pre-consumer waste like car seat belts, army canvas, and bouncy castles into stylish, functional bags and decor.

But the impact doesn’t stop at materials. Jaggery uses the Design Out of Waste Methodology (DOWM) to train underserved communities in sustainable design, creating circular jobs and fostering economic resilience. With a strong emphasis on environmental consciousness, Jaggery’s creations divert waste from landfills, reduce pollution, and inspire a rethinking of value and waste.

Bageeya: Reimagining Fashion with Flowers and Fabric

Bageeya, founded by civil-engineer-turned-designer Jigisha Shukla, takes a soulful approach to sustainable fashion. With eco-dyed fabrics, organic cotton, Chanderi, and handwoven silks, their unisex collection features versatile and reversible styles- from detachable sarees to zero-waste jewelry.

A standout initiative is their use of temple flowers- offered in devotion, then repurposed instead of discarded into rivers- to reduce water pollution. Bageeya’s slow fashion model also supports Indian weavers and artisans, aiming to create affordable, fashionable, and sustainable clothing for everyone.
