Purpose
With a deep knowledge of indigenous artisans and the goal to generate employment for those who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic, Solayi was started. They have always been attracted to jewellery that fuses elements from everyday life – fabrics, threads, beads, ceramics, papers over traditional gold, silver, and diamonds. Weaving and embroidery always stood out to them as they brainstormed techniques.
People
They employ a team of local artisans including women artisans from Jaipur. For the Kalakaari collection, they collaborated with artists across various regions in the country to bring attention to diverse and dying art forms such as Warli and Madhubani. While these art forms are popularized through Computer Aided Designs (CAD) in textile industry and stationery, they retain the authenticity of the art by directly sourcing the work from its practitioners. This ensures visibility to their art, fair representation, and enhances the beauty of their work when they fuse it with metal work to create jewelry.
Planet
They aim to minimize waste within the fashion industry, produce sustainable and mindfully crafted creations, and ensure fair wages to our work force. Their aims are sustainability, social consciousness, and ethical fashion. Several products are created from upcycled cloth scraps discarded by tailors and boutiques to minimize waste. As an environmentally-conscious venture, they want to ensure sustainability, minimal waste, and low dependence on anything machine-made. The products are slow-made in small batches. The packaging consists of soft jute pouches which are sewn by the team.
